What in the world is a doula?

I get this question a lot. My short answer is we support women during pregnancy and childbirth. My long answer is so much more.

Doula’s help women empower themselves, to believe in themselves, and their inner strength.

Doula’s support you whether you chose an epidural, a cesarean birth, or a water birth at home. Doula’s believe that you know what is best for your body and your baby!

A doula is not the same as a midwife, who is a trained medical professional. We provide emotional, physical, and educational support to families whether you use a midwife or a doctor.

Doula support is tailored to each client and looks different for everyone. Whether it is providing counter pressure or massage through each contraction, bringing water or wash clothes, walking with you, encouraging you, or simply just being present.

A Doula doesn’t replace your partner. Your partner knows you best, and makes you feel loved and safe. We support you both. During prenatal appointments we get to know you and your partner, and discuss ways they can support you during labor.

Doula’s are there for the birth, but support starts much earlier. Doulas educate clients about childbirth and comfort measures. Doulas learn your preferences and get to know you, really get to know you! Doulas are available for questions, are always researching, and provide you with resources.

Labor hours are long. It is tough with children of your own, but witnessing the strength of women and their active participation in creating a miracle makes it all worth it! ❤️
